파주철거GP는 본래 비무장지대 내부에 존재하는 최전방 감시초소(Guard Post)이다. 남북은 2018년 ‘9·19 군사분야 합의서’에 따라 비무장지대내 GP 11개를 시범 철거 하였고 이중 파주 GP자리도 이때 철거된 것 중 하나이다. 애초 DMZ는 정전협정에 따라서 무장이 불가능한 곳이지만, 남과 북은 냉전기간 중 GP를 설치하고 대남대북방송 등 상호간 불신과 적대행위를 지속해왔다. 따라서 2018년 남북이 함께 GP를 철거한 것은 총을 쟁기로 바꾸고, 냉전의 콘크리트 구조물을 헐어내고 평화의 온기가 스며든 흙으로 전환시킴으로써 DMZ에서의 재무장화를 방지하고 평화가 지속될 수 있는 토대를 마련한 것으로서 중요한 의미가 있다. 정부는 2019년 ‘DMZ 평화의 길’을 조성하였고 철거GP를 국민들에게 개방하였다. 방문객들은 파주철거GP에서 북한 땅을 700m 앞에서 조망하며 DMZ 평화의 의미를 체감할 수 있게 되었다. 이번 전시는 이렇게 조성된 철거GP 흙 위에 평화를 상징하는 예술작품을 설치하고 남북공존상생의 꽃을 피우는 데 의미가 있다. 이제 DMZ는 남북주민과 세계인들에게 더 이상 분단의 상징이 아닌 찾고 싶은 명소로 탈바꿈하고 한반도 평화·신뢰 구축과 군사적 긴장 완화의 상징으로 자리매김 할 것이다.

 The guard posts (GPs) are frontline surveillance posts inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). After the Korean War, the South and North agreed to ban soldiers from entering the DMZ, so each side installed hundreds of GPs on their side of the DMZ, staffed with armed “police,” thereby turning the DMZ into a heavily armed area. In 2018, the leaders of the two Koreas agreed to demolish 11 GPs in the DMZ, including one in Paju, by implementing the September 19th Military Agreement. Following the Panmunjom Declaration in 2018, the South Korean government established the DMZ Peace Trail to allow the public to visit and transform the DMZ into a peaceful zone. The trail starts in Goseong and ends at the Paju GP. North Korea is only 700 m away from the demolished Paju GP, so this historical site bears the pain of division while also signifying peace on the Korean Peninsula.
